چکیده

We assess brain areas involved in speech production using a recently developed lesion-symptom mapping method (voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping, VLSM) with 50 aphasic patients with left-hemisphere lesions. Conversational speech was collected through a standardized biographical interview, and used to determine mean length of utterance in morphemes (MLU), type token ratio (TTR) and overall tokens spoken for each patient. These metrics are used as indicators of grammatical complexity, semantic variation, and amount of speech, respectively. VLSM analysis revealed that damage to the anterior insula was predictive of low scores on MLU and tokens, consistent with prior findings of the role of this region in speech production [Dronkers, N. F. (1996). A new brain region for coordinating speech articulation. Nature, 384(6605), 159-161]. Additionally, the inferior frontal gyrus, sensorimotor and anterior temporal areas were also associated with lower scores on both of these measures. Overall, token and MLU maps were highly similar, suggesting an overlap between grammatical language networks and overall fluency. TTR maps also shared some portions of this network, but damage to posterior temporal regions also reduced scores on this measure. These results represent the first voxel-based lesion analysis of speech production performance in aphasic patients.

Triangulation of language-cognitive impairments, naming errors and their neural bases post-stroke

In order to gain a better understanding of aphasia one must consider the complex combinations of language impairments along with the pattern of paraphasias. Despite the fact that both deficits and paraphasias feature in diagnostic criteria, most research has focused only on the lesion correlates of language deficits, with minimal attention on the pattern of patients' paraphasias. In this study,...

Pragmatic language production deficits in Parkinson’s disease

This study examines pragmatic language production deficits in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Participants (PD and non-PD) were interviewed and their responses coded for degree of informativeness. PD participants were more under-informative than non-PD participants. Response underinformativeness was associated with decreased executive control, mental status, and speech act comprehension m...

Action comprehension in aphasia: linguistic and non-linguistic deficits and their lesion correlates.

We tested aphasic patients' comprehension of actions to examine processing deficits in the linguistic and non-linguistic domains and their lesion correlates. Twenty-nine left-hemisphere injured patients and 18 age-matched control subjects matched pictured actions (with the objects missing) or their linguistic equivalents (printed sentences with the object missing) to one of two visually-present...

Acoustical Correlates to S Characteristics in Two

For synthesizing voice quality expressed by adjectives, this paper investigates acoustical correlates to adjective ratings of speaker characteristics for reading and conversational speech. The results revealed: (1) The speaking styles have little effect on the rates on adjective scales. (2) The effects of formant frequencies and long-term spectrum to adjective ratings are almost independent of ...

Ethnomethodology and Conversational Analysis

In a speech community, people utilize their communicative competence which they have acquired from their society as part of their distinctive sociolinguistic identity. They negotiate and share meanings, because they have commonsense knowledge about the world, and have universal practical reasoning. Their commonsense knowledge is embodied in their language. Thus, not only does social life depend...
